Research Description:

The focus of the laboratory is on programmed cell death or apoptosis, particularly on discovery of new mechanisms of apoptotic regulation and development of new strategies for cancer therapy. Using a combination of biochemical, cell biology and molecualr biology approaches, Lee's laboratory has discovered several novel changes in mitochondria during apoptosis. New targets downstream of the Bcl-2 family and crosstalks between mitochondria and the Golgi complex were identified. These new mechanisms will be explored to develop new strategies that could have therapeutic application in cancers. Based on our studies, two new drugs appear very promising to induce apoptosis in cancer, and will move to animal studies in the near future.
