Cell Biology
The structure and behavior of individual cells within a multicellular organism define its morphology and physiology. Cells must grow and divide, differentiate into specialized cell types and, when appropriate, cells must die. Cell motility and adhesion are crucial processes that maintain orderly development and functioning of tissues and organs. In addition, intracellular signaling as well as communication between cells and their environment are important cellular behaviors. The molecules that mediate this communication are often mutated in human cancers. In addition, the balance of cell adhesion and motility is altered in a metastatic cancer cell. Finally, cell proliferation and differentiation are misregulated in the cancer cell.
